I grandi artisti si distinguono dagli altri perché sono formalmente essenziali. Da uno sfondo scuro emerge l’intensità di uno sguardo e la piccola luce di una perla. Purezza assoluta! I piani e i volumi sono poi determinati dall’abile distribuzione dei colori, scelti senza alcuna leziosità.

La luce è protagonista di quest’opera. Essa definisce le singole parti dando volume agli oggetti e profondità all’ambiente. La pulizia cromatica e la precisione grafica delle singole parti rendono poi quasi surreale, direi paradossalmente novecentesca, l’atmosfera.

Il cardellino! Meravigliosa simbolica presenza, spesso secondaria, sicuramente sempre in secondo piano, in numerosi dipinti rinascimentali. Stavolta, finalmente, il piccolo essere diventa un grandioso protagonista che osserva muto l’osservatore. E’ quindi l’abilità dell’artista a ingigantirne pittoricamente la presenza nel nudo ampio spazio.

In più aggiunge preziosa matericità all’impasto cromatico, luce agli incarnati, solennità ai gesti. Certo, l’osservazione diretta dell’opera è indispensabile.
